About Me

My real name is Tammy and I live in beautiful San Diego, CA. I started running regularly in Feb 2008, although I ran off and on since the beginning of 2007. It was a quest to become more fit, and maybe even perhaps lose some weight.

Just decided to keep a blog to help me remember these times.

BTW, I know that chic is pronounced sheek and has nothing to do with being a “chick”. But marathonchick.com was taken, and I’ve never liked spelling chick with a k anyway. Always reminds me of a baby chicken, which I am not. And it’s my site and I’ll spell it how ever I like… ha!

What I’m Doing…

For the fourth year in a row, I’ve signed up to complete an endurance event with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training (TNT). I'm training to run in the San Diego Rock 'N Roll Marathon.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.

Why I’m Doing It…

I lost someone very close to me because of Lymphoma.

When my Uncle Wayne was first diagnosed with Lymphoma, he was given an extremely low chance of survival. But he decided to fight, and he fought valiantly. He went into remission for three years. What a wonderful gift he gave to his family and friends. However, on June 8, 2001, just one month shy of his 57th birthday, he lost his final battle.

I remember Uncle Wayne mostly as the uncle with the red hair and mustache. I remember him being the quiet, “tough” guy who loved Harley’s, served his community as a St. Louis County cop, and served his country in Vietnam. He was an amazing father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, son & friend, and those who knew him miss him terribly.

This is why the mission of the LLS means so much to me.

I hope to raise at least $1575 for LLS and am asking for your support in meeting this challenge. Please share my website and pass it around to your colleagues, friends and family. Every contribution counts!

How Your Donation Can Help…

  • $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • $50 registers one person to be a bone marrow donor.
  • $75 provides HLA (bone marrow) typing for a family member of a patient with leukemia.
  • $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • $150 provides 10 patients access to a web-conference to learn about their specific blood cancer.
  • $300 will train 25 peer volunteers who can provide emotional support to newly diagnosed patients.
  • $500 could provide patient aid to a person with Leukemia or a related cancer for an ENTIRE YEAR.
  • $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS’s mission.
